Ford T-18 swap

Post by FSJfan »

What would it take to swap a Ford T-18 in my 77 J10? I currently have the Jeep T-18 in and was wanting a transmission with parts more readily available. What kind of adapter would I need to adapt my Dana 20?
1977 Jeep J10 T-18 w/ wide ratio sitting on 33x12.50 I’m a high schooler without much mechanical background but I’m trying to learn. So thoroughness is greatly appreciated.

Why? Except for the input shaft, it's the same transmission as a Ford. Very very unlikely you'll ever need to replace the input shaft.

The short input on the Ford version would put the shifter under the dash.

Yeah, no point in doing this swap. Internals are the same for the most part. Bearings and such are all available. And you would need new drive shafts, a different t-case, and the shifter would be funky.

FYI: Ford used a divorced t-case behind the T18 in their trucks.

Don't know about the earlier ones, but by the '80s the Fords use the same long output and long adapter that my J20 uses. Same oddball spline count too, AFAIK.

The bolt pattern to bolt the trans to the bell housing is different. Where the Ford T-18 pattern is symmetrical the Jeep T-18 pattern has two bolts on one side in different spots. The PTO port is also on the opposite side on the Ford T-18.

I think by the 80's Ford switched to the T19. I know a friend had a '76 with a T18 and it had a divorced 205 behind it.

I salavaged a J20 with Ford T18 and Ford NP208. The input shaft is slightly different length and rear is 31 spline. Other than that It is the same as the Jeep T18. It bolted up with the Jeep spacer. I still have the parts on the shelf. Cant seem to sell them--note its not a complete trans, selling the parts

You sure it wasn't a Jeep T18? They did come from the factory in 80's J20's with a 208 behind them. Along with the super long adapter between the trans and t-case and reverse down by 4th instead of up by 3rd.

No it was different than the other T18s I had on the shelf. The pilot bearing nipple was much longer and it had the 31 spline output shaft to the Tcase. The Tcase was also wider-case was 3: wider pushing it out to the side to clear the trans/exhaust I guess.

80's Jeep T18's have a 31 spline output (Same as ford). 70's have the 10 spline, which fits into the dog gear on the front of the D20.

I thought/but maybe wrong that all Jeep output splines were 23 going into the NPs??

True of the TF727, T5, and T17x transmissions. Not for the 80+ T18.

If that's the case, it maybe a Jeep T18
