Nutter Bypass

Post by sawbroadcast »

I have an 83 J-18 with a 258, while I have seen plenty of online instructions for a Nutter Bypass for CJ-7's nothing for J-10. A few questions;

1. Have you done this and is it worth the time, I would love to get rid of some of these hoses
2. Is the instructions for a CJ-7 the same as a J-10?
2. Is it necessary to replace the Distributor and Carb or can I leave the stock?

Thanks

Have you read John Nutter's article, describing this modification? Sure seems like you have not ... http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/electr ... gnition99/

The bypass disables the idle stepper motor and defeats ignition advance control on 258s with the BBD carburetor. You would do this to "fix" the broken factory systems. An '83 J10 should have the stepper motor - you can read about this system in the TSM which is free to download here http://oljeep.com/edge_parts_man.html The '82 manual is used for an '83 with a supplement, so the '82 manual is mostly correct. The stepper motor is described at page 1J-50, and the CEC system at 1J-84. Read those pages, and look at your truck. A CJ-7 and J-10 from these years should be the same re the CEC - look at the manual and look at your truck.

Note that '81 FSJ's sold in California also had the stepper motor. I did the by-pass on mine, but now run an HEI.
