Aftermarket Body Panels?

Post by 66stepside »

Has anyone used an after market source for body panels?

I found this:

https://www.carid.com/1965-jeep-wagonee ... er-panels/

But I'm not sure if they're a decent quality, or not.

When I helped a buddy redo his rear quarter panels on his Camaro, I remember there was quite a bit of hammer-dolly usage to massage those panels into place.

Is that just the way it is body panel replacements?

I would imagine all of the different brands of stamped FSJ panels are made off the same dies. It doesn't seem like enough of a market to have warranted multiple sets of dies, so I assume the quality would be the same across the board. I may be wrong of course.

Most aftermarket panels don't fit 100% right, unless they are stamped on the original dies. 73-80 Chevy fenders usually fit like crap at the cowl/a pillar area on foreign stamped replacements.

My Taiwan J-Truck fenders fit OK, but where super thin and had poor spot welds for the flair and extensions.

Thanks for the insight. I figured the jeep stuff would be kind of the same "quality" as the Chevy stuff.

I remember reading a review of a few different manufacturer's panels. It was either here or ifsja that I saw it. I do know that none of the panels were perfect but iirc, one brand was significantly better than the others.

I'll search the ifsja site for the name of the better panels. I didn't find anything when I searched this site.

FYI BJ's was trying to get a deal going with Melnicks to carry their panels, but Melnicks kept dropping the ball. It's not an in stock product.

I found my replacement panels from junkyards. Don’t try to get Chinese junk parts . There are still lots of these trucks are the yard .

The patches I bought for the Chevelle needed fitting, they were not made from factory dies.
Still better than hammering on sheet steel from scratch. When I get busy on the 69 I'll spring for
a pair of lower rear patches. If they are anywhere close I'll get them to fit.

Haven't seen any FSJs in our yards for years, and the bodies were rotted or thrashed. Still looking...
