In tank tbi pump with carb?

Post by dodgerammit »

Still having fuel delivery issues and am leaning toward going pusher for my application. Thing is, I want whatever I do to be easily serviceable on the side of the road with easy to find parts available anywhere. An in tank would be nice since I could replace it via the access hole under the rear seat.

I've read up on the in tank units for tbi on the fuel injection board. I know they make up to 15 psi.

Will this be a problem on a 2150 if I have the return line filter installed? Seems like it would only fill to what the floats would need, and return the extra.

Thanks

May have answered my own question after more searching. The low pressure/in-tank unit for an 89 F350 with the 460. Same vehicle I use for my TFI parts. Flows 4-7 psi and 28-40 gph. http://www.autozone.com/fuel-delivery/f ... 3_175504_0

I used an inline pump on my CJ prior to the TBI conversion, you do need a fuel regulator to limit it to I believe, 3-5 psi.

And now that I think about it, I did the same on my Cherokee with an in tank pump for the 89 Blazer 4.3.

I've found a better one available at Autozone on their shelves since the Oreilly one was order only.

Should fit the bill. 4-6 psi, 20-35 gph. I have a return line that should take care of any excess without needing a regulator.

Please come back and tell us how it works out.

As long as you have the return line to bleed off excess pressure, you will be fine with that pump.

Well, I got it installed this week and put about 120mi on her yesterday and today. No vapor lock issues. Every time I checked, the clear filter was full of fuel. Discovered there is an erratic idle problem with my carb. Actually: I already knew this. More or less discovered the throttle shaft has more play than first thought. This 2150 is a reman, but from reading other's posts, this is a common problem. It'll do for now. Already planning junkyard tbi....

I was thinking of pics of the install. Did you do it? Or mechanic?

I am surprised it's not blowing the needle off the seat and flooding with no regulator.

Why would I need a regulator? It only runs between 4-6 psi. Same as the mechanical pump does. Flows about the same rate as well.

No pics of the install, but it looks very close to babywag's job. I ended up using the Ford low pressure deal and it mounted just fine to the existing 5/16" pick up tube.
IMG_1422.JPG
I only straightened the tube
measured depth of tank
allowed for a bit of wiggle room with the pump
trimmed the tube with a tubing cutter
and attached pump to bottom.

I drilled a 3/8" hole in the top of the assembly beside the actual sending unit electronics and inserted a rubber grommet, then fed 2 12ga wires through for the pump.

Sorry, I missed the pressure rating of the pump.
