What spark plug wire set for HEI?

Post by Curly »

The plug wire set on my 77 360 is ridiculously long and is a solid core type. I am assuming it is a generic- one size fits all - set. I want to get a set that fits better and is spiral wound to reduce interference with the module and radio. Is there an application that I can order that will fit better?
The Distributor is HEI.
Example: 85 Chevy truck 350

Thanks
Curly

I've found that even the stock wires (non-HEI) can be a little messy under the hood. I like to buy custom wire sets (MSD/StreetFire, Accel, Taylor, whatever) and cut them myself. They come with all the hardware, and you only have to buy the crimper once. If memory serves, MSD/StreetFire custom wire sets come with some janky little crimper blocks you can use in a vice.

I've used the Summit universal wires (blue) on two of my Jeeps. Seems fine. The Jegs universal set (yellow) gets good reviews too. Summit set comes with a crimping tool. The universal set lets you terminate the distributor end of the wires with the old cup style or the HEI post style.

Also, make sure to get the straight boots for the plug ends. The angled boots hit the exhaust manifolds

I recall wires for the later Ford 460 work very well.

First time I bought wires for a Buick 350 that came with HEI. But I have also used wires from crt performance which are a better length match.

But custom is ultimately the best if you have the time.

Number 8 was still very tight, for me.

I used a set for a 5.0 Mustang '87-'93, mainly because I had them already.
They are a good fit for length, etc. YMMV
I've had many different sets/brands over the years, seems each brand was always a little different. So when someone says this application works great, no guarantee you'll have same luck with same application but different brand.
