headers and cams questions

Post by Saul32 »

Waiting for the weather to get better to do some parts changing. While I wait I'm also trying to figure out wether or not Ishould go w cam upgrades and headers as well.
I'm not going to be wheelin much but I want a strong reliable DD.
What headers and cams are recommended?
I noticed BJs offers 1 camshaft kit and Jegs has 43.
Pros and cons?
Also, would it be stupid to install headers and keep the catalytic converter?
Thanks gents

Not sure what your current mods are, but if you don't have a 4bbl carb and intake, you might as well factor that into the bill in order to fully benefit from another cam/headers.

Jegs sells cams to cover everybody, from 4X4's to those built with intentions of using on a dragstrip, in a light car, built to rev out to 7k, with a high stall converter and wouldn't make any usable power under 3k rpm.

BJ's sells a cam that makes good low end torque, which is what is needed in a heavy, daily-driven FSJ.

Cam Pros: More power/more torque.

Cam Cons: If there are emission requirements in your area, it might not pass.

Header Pros: More power/more torque.

Header Cons: Again with the emissions test. Some can leak...repeatedly. Really good ones (Doug Thorleys) can and will break the bank.

I'd go with a high flow converter(s) if you go with a cam/headers...

Should I just stick to the Edlebrock intake manifold and Holley Truck Avenger carb with a Mallory HEI distributor and call it a day??
I'm planning on doing it asap anyway. I was just throwing the idea of headers n cam around

Which Avenger? 470 or 670?

470, If it were me, I'd stay with the stock cam/exhaust manifolds...but that's just me.

670, then I'd think in order to fully utilize it, you'd have a bigger need to increase the breathability downstream (cam/headers/free flow exhaust). Not mandatory by no means, but would make more sense with the 670 cfm carb.

Just food for thought, here's a CFM calculator:
