Wally's bigger axles

Post by fulsizjeep »

Sorta build thread for 3/4 ton axle upgrade on my 88 GW - HD44 front with SOA and 2" AAL, D60 rear on TT SF kit and 2" AAL - total lift around 8"

Started a couple years ago when I swung a deal with Jaime for a 86 J20 front axle he had used. It is set up with 4.10s on a Detroit worm gear LSD. He had the hubs and stuff on something else so I got a deal with Tad last year for the steering and outers to get rolling.

Image

I got it home with a hand off from Jaime at Ouray last July.
Image

Tad package of goodies.
Image

Image

put together...
Image
That covers the front for now.

Along the way I picked up a set of Chevy wheels off Bigun. He had bought them for the ries so I scored a deal! I got to set them on the axles last summer for fit test. Lookin Good. :-bd
Image

In December I stumbled into some used 37s - pictured here on a K5 Blazer.
Image

They fit nice on the Cheby wheels.
Image

For now they are stored on the J20 so I can use the 32s on the project.
Image

Ryan had some horse trading going on and ended up with a Dodge<?> D60 rear end he did not need. He and I trade all the time since we met so I got a deal on that package. There is a box of brake parts that may or may not fit the drums. I need to get the D60 in the shop so I can get in to it. The D60 has been sitting on a pallet for 2 years and ended up with a pile of QTs on top of it.

So, on to yesterday... Got a couple QTs moved from the pile out back to the shop with a wheel barrow. On a crappy day, I will go down and bust 'em open for salvage. The pallet I had this stuff on cratered recently. In the process, I dug the D60 out from under said pile of QTs and positioned it for the roller 32s off the J20. Then I found this axle does not the same stud size as used on a J20. I guess that is a 7/16" vs. 1/2" thing.

Image

The J20 axle is tucked away in a tarp on my sawhorse work table. The rest is a variety of 70s FSJ QTs, T400s, springs and axles. The big tub is full of scrap steel that is mostly burnt out T400 and QT parts and the little weber grill I ran over <sigh>.
Image

I need some lug nuts until I can get it in the shop. I imagine the flanges can be drilled for the bigger stud right? :?:

As far as I know the flange can be drilled out, so you should be ok there. But I would advise a machine do it.

Huh?
Weird, the HD44 outers you have that came from me are 9/16" studs, same as my D60 front and 14-Bolt rear

ooops - that was a typo - 9/16" vs 1/2", the D60 has 1/2" studs...
I don't know what year. This axle has been passed around. Guess I need to find the BOM.

Looks good Flint, I hope to see them in Ouray this year!

BTW, if any one can locate me a set of used HP D44 78-79 F250 inner and outer shafts it would be much appreciated. I cannot find any used here in Denver. I am not sure what other years/models are compatible. If any knows that info it would help too.

I think BillaVista has a list of axle shaft years/lengths/compatability Scott.
It's on Pirate and I can't get on there from work.
My thinking is that the HD44 shafts are the same as the 44 shafts from similar years but I'm not real up on the Ford stuff.

Thanks Tad, are you referring to this post? He has a lot so it may be the wrong one.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavist ... idAxle.htm

He doesn't list the F250 shafts which from the BOM have a different length than the F150. Here are the specs for my axle.

Right side assembly (660003-3)
Overall Length with U-joint (5-297X) – 44 15/32”
Inner Shaft (30 Spline)
Major Spline Diameter – 1 5/16”
Centerline to End of Spline – 34 ¾”
Outer Shaft (19 Spline)
Major Spline Diameter – 1 ¼”
Centerline to End of Spline – 9 23/32”

Left side assembly (660003-4)
Overall Length with U-joint (5-297X) – 28 11/32”
Inner Shaft (30 Spline)
Major Spline Diameter – 1 5/16”
Centerline to End of Spline – 18 5/8”
Outer Shaft (19 Spline)
Major Spline Diameter – 1 ¼”
Centerline to End of Spline – 9 23/32”

I did not get the flat tops from Tad, just the steering arms. I think Jon Barstow got those flat tops with the rest of the Tad axle.

This project has been in my head for quite a while and those wheels fit the 37s pretty good. Thanks Charlie!

Educate me about the width.

J20 axles, or Wide Track axles are about 6" wider than the stock Wagoneer axle.

So will you have these W/T axles cut down or are you planning to cut the fenders to clear those 37's?

J10/20 axles are wider than WT axles in back, by quite a bit. J10 front is the same as a WT Cherokee. I believe a J20 front is a tiny bit wider.

My guess is it will be cutting time!

I forget what the width of the D60 is Bryan. It is from a Dodge and not as wide as as a J20 D60. I will be buying a new sawzall for trim work when I get home from the Florida trip since I just put some 35s on it. When the 3/4 ton stuff goes on, I have some WT fenders to use on front that will get some trimming. No worries, they are rough to start with and missing the lower corners.
