5.3 ls to an FSJ T18?

Post by Manimal70 »

Has anyone done it? Will it place the engine in a bad spot? I can get 5.3's all day long for $350-400, been throwing around the TBI thought again and had this pop into my head. Any help woould be greatly appreciated. :-bd

I wouldn't do it but that's me.
I'd go th400 or even a th350 would be fine.

Well, I have the T18 and want to go manual. So maybe I should reconsider what trans I use. Maybe an SM465? OR maybe I should just stay with the AMC engine?

I feel that an NV4500 would bolt right to a 5.3 and then you could swap in a GM 'case to match.

the 4500 shifts much smoother than a T18, plus has the 5th gear.

The short T-18 from a Ford is easy to mate to a Chevy, but it will put the shfter under the dash. If you want to use the long T-18 from a V8 FSJ, you should talk to Novak about it. The T-15-to-GM bellhousing adapter should work with the Jeep T-18 too, since they both use the same bellhousing.

an NV4500 would be great, except in my area they are $800-2500 depending on condition. ..that's $300-2000 more than I paid for my entire Wagoneer! :-bd

Trust me, by the time you finish this swap, you'll be paying many times over what you paid for your truck if you do it right. Good luck with the swap though.

How'd this turn out? I am looking to do a swap on my 84 GW. I have a 401 and already own a T18. I am on the fence if I bite the bullet and go with the NV4500. I am just not sure what to do. I am having a hard time trying to find a drivers side drop to match with either of those trannys. I am trying not to spend 500-700 on a damn adapter. If anyone has any kind of input that would be greatly appreciated. I have a budge for this and want to do it right. You guys throw out suggestions and not be to concerned about the cost. I say this with tongue in cheek :P
