Maybe I'm way off here but this appears to be a quality part for the price. (Please chime in if it's junk also.) I first got the cast iron one ($40) from a local parts house which rubbed on the harmonic balancer. I should have known something was wrong because the original package was under the pump. Someone else had prob returned it also. After a google search this is a very common problem. It got returned. This is the aluminum one and is supposed to be an oe replacement. Much nicer piece, costs less, looks to allow better flow as the id on all the connections is alot bigger & is notched on the bottom so that it doesn't hit the balancer. Can anyone confirm/deny it's quality?

If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.
Does it have a thin metal plate on the back of the impeller? The airtex one I just got of amazon does and I love it. I haven't installed it yet but comparing it to a factory water pump the casting matches perfectly at the flange and is 10x better than the factory everywhere else. Big flow passages, precise machining and the biggest impeller that will fit into the housing. They even have an amc pump on the box!
That cover on the impeller is called a Closed Impeller design and moves more coolant than the OE style. That company that makes HiFlow pumps uses a similar impeller design and cost 3x as much. I just ordered the last GMB in stock from Amazon just to have it on hand

Thanks for the infos.... indeed a better match. Most of the cast iron pumps have to be touched up.... filling at the harmonic balancer, smoothing the casting ridges on the hose areas, I remember to even add a flange on one of the passages.... then of course you have the paint process, so the pump does not rust....

Funny. I was looking for a waterpump myself. I went to get one from NAPA for my 4.0L Comanche and what I was offered was a made in China POS that the holes drilled were too far off to match the gasket. They ordered another and it was the same way. I took a look at O'Reilly's pump which looked better but the $50 tag made me squeamish. I just bought the Prestone 110-1080 for $22 delivered (wife has Prime) which is probably a GMB re-box. On the 4 cyl and 4.0L they last 2-3 years then leak but it's adequate.
2-3 Years! Shoot I just replaced the original on the 74 and it didn't leak until the bearing had come out the front of the pump! And even then it drove 15 miles home!
Well that just ain't true. Nothing in china is made like the originals. This here GMB is made in Japan and is a darn good pump. Shouldn't fail anytime in the perceivable future. I'd say its better than the originals. Part number is: gmb-110-1080p
