ignition switch removal

Post by wagoneer1982 »

What is the correct process for removing and replacing the ignition switch in an 82 Waggy? Does the steering wheel need to come out? Sorry for all the basic questions here lately, im new to the FSJ world :-bd

Hello and welcome!

Yes, you need to lower the steering column to get to the switch. Just remove the lower bezel, the 4 column bolts and ease the column down so you can get to those two small screws on the switch. I think they are 11/32" on the 82s.

Good Luck!

The factory service manual (FSM, TSM) has a detailed writeup about the steering column.

Most of the '82 TSM is online here - http://oljeep.com/edge_parts_man.html

You can buy a quality reprint from BJs and many other places - http://www.bjsoffroad.com/prod-677.htm - BJ's will give you a modest discount as a member of this forum.

I took off the AC conduit and took the screws out with it still in place. The electric switch is on the column above the brake pedal. The key switch just moves a rod that operates the electric one.

Remember that the ignition switch must be mounted in the correct spot on the steering column. The mounting bolt slots in the switch are oblong which provide for some adjustment of the switch either up or down the steering column. As another poster mentioned, when you turn your key, a metal rod is moved which is connected to the ignition switch. If the switch isnt in the correct position on the column, the vehicle may not start, or you will have funky things happen in efferent key positions, like accessory power when the key is in the off position. Just remember to adjust the ignition switch up or down on the column until all the key functions (off, acc, run, start) all work as expected. You can do this.

The ignition switch is not in the column. Steering wheel does not come off. The switch is at the bottom of the column and is activated by a rod. It’s pretty simple to replace. The Linked TSM instructions above will help you.
