Carb Questions

Post by berettajeep »

'74 Cherokee 401 Auto. Just had dual exhaust replaced ( 2.5 into 2.25 behind the trans, straight out the back.) Everything else is stock.

Somewhere in its past the carburetor was replace with a Carter AFB comp. series. I just need opinions on how this is hooked up. I have done some searches with how it is suppose to be set up and I get different results. Before I start switching things and/or making life more difficult for myself, I am looking for input.

PCV is connected to the rear port on carb.

Ports 1, 2 and 3 are blocked off.

Does this look correct?

Right now it has a slight hesitation when first taking off from a stop and when I just shut it down it dieseled for a few seconds.

Edelbrock bought Carter and Webber, the new carbs have all 3 names on them. ;)

Thank you for those links Letank.

I will move the PCV to the front now and block the rear.

Right now the distributor is hooked up to the timed vacuum for emissions controlled engines. Previous owners removed everything emissions so do I want to switch to the manifold vacuum port?

You are opening a can of worms...

If you are not subject to emission checks, you will be very happy with the manifold vacuum to the distributor. Start at 12degrees (my 74 list 5 but 12 is much better, unless you have to smog it) with the vacuum line to the distributor plugged. I am running 15... As it is said.... timing for the maximum vacuum, then lower a bit if it pings.

Of course then you need to tune your distributor total advance as well.

Which distributor do you have stock or ?

Stock distributor. Where I am now, there are no emissions required. I still need to replace the points and I have never done that. Looks simple but I tend to over think / over analyze things :banghead:

Points..... aaaaack, ditched mine for the pertronix. The engine was so quiet, that my kids thought that I put a new motor. Now I am running HEI in the 74 after I fried the pertronix with a big coil... but it lasted 100Kmiles.

Still w the OEM duraspark in the 85 with the big cap and the better coil, it is better than the HEI.

Read about distributor horror stories before swapping distributor.

I ran both timed and manifold vacuum on my old Cherokee. Went back and forth a few times, settled on timed. It had zero smog.

I also ran three distributer setups. Stock Prestolite (terrible setup), went back to point, very reliable and worked great until they floated at about 4500rpm. Then moved to HEI and never looked back.

Definitely move away from points when you can. If you go HEI you get a much hotter spark and can re-gap the plugs wider for a fuller burn. Depending on what one you choose it also eliminates some wires under the hood.

That will be a future mod, but it will be when I replace the fuse block / switch to volt meter / Alternator upgrade. For the moment I want to get it running decent.
