1970 Wagoneer Dash Mounted Ignition switch Diagram

Post by Chubbinius »

Would anyone by chance happen to have a good wiring diagram (including wire colors) or a photograph of their dash mounted ignition switch, please? TSM, Chilton and search function on here and IFSJA haven't turned up anything. Google gives me lots of other ones, but not the one in these older Waggies. :banghead: I'm trying to confirm wiring and connections on mine. Thank you for any assistance.

Thank you, I did check there, sorry I forgot to add that in. It has wiring for a 72, but not a 70, I don't know enough about the wiring to tell the differences. I imagine it's close, but not sure, the ignition switch I have in has more terminals than wiring plugs hanging under the dash, jut trying to make sure I get them on the right terminals and the right colors...of course that's trusting that the wires hanging under the dash are going to the right places when I bought it. Oh my!

'72 should be pretty close to the '70 layout. You could trace out the wires that you have (ie see where they go using your multimeter) and compare that to the '72 diagram. I presume you also have a diagram for 1970, which you could blow up with a copy machine and trace out with colored pencils. Wiring diagrams in this era were not very complicated. The '72 diagram is unusual in being a 3D drawing of the wiring with a color code and explanation near by. Parts book says the ignition switch is the same for Wagoneers, '72 and prior.

Tim, thank you. I used the diagram babywag linked to for the 72 on oljeep and a copy of my 70 from the TSM, and am tracing them out now...test light is showing me two lines hot in run (likely a short between the Neutral Safety Switch and Solenoid). Boo, I will have to start hunting through the wire bundles to find the break/short. The bummer is that the colors don't match (purple instead of blue and such). Thanks!

Looking at the '72 book, the switch normally has a plastic shell (big socket thing) that presses on the end of the switch. I would be surprised if the '70 harness was not exactly the same. Has someone removed the shell? If it's missing, this one will likely work: https://www.est1946.com/ignitionswitchplug.aspx It's pretty much a standard part.

Awesome, thanks I will likely order that one. The one in the Pig is cracked up and has several terminals that are separated. I had to trim back through a pile of wires to find a couple that had melted and were shorting out the starter (starter coming on in run...and while driving). Joy!
