Rebuilding my 89 GW - just redid the headliner - did not pay much attention to the interior - it is covered in the picture but what is this in the picture - the circuit board on the back side and you can see the prongs that are protruding out of the new headliner material.

That is indeed the original IR remote keyless entry module. Can’t get the remotes any longer AFAIK — nor would you want them — they had about a 10-15ft range and was line-of-sight.
Can remove it without any trouble, and cover the hole (for the IR “eye”) when you recover the console.
Can also plumb in an aftermarket remote system (like Viper), and mount the receiver up in the overhead console. Can access door lock/unlock, and parking lights (which will blink when locking/unlocking) all up in the overhead console wiring.
