New Process 208 rebuild

Post by backroader »

Hi folks.

I'm rebuilding the NP208 transfer case in my 1981 J10 due to a bad planetary in the low range reduction unit.

When I took the case apart, a whole bunch of loose roller bearings came spilling out.

Wondering if someone has some tips for putting this back together.. Steps or proper order to ease reassembly.

Thanks.

The needle bearings need to be held in place with a little grease or petroleum jelly.

If you don't have it already, get a rebuild kit with new bearings, seals, and gaskets. And find a good set of instructions online.

Yes, I've already ordered a rebuild kit and the planet gear.

And I know the grease trick to hold loose bearing in place. There are some videos on reassembling transfer cases online and some are pretty good, and some not so good.

Just wondering if anyone here has done this job already, and if they had any tips on reassembly.

I had an 81 208 apart once. It was too far gone to salvage. I was lucky to find one for sale that had been overhauled by a forum member.

Here is the TSM if you don't have one yet. Good luck!

Thanks fulsizjeep.

Exactly the sort of info I was looking for, and I did not have the manual.

I rebuilt my 208 when I swapped the input shaft.

There's really nothing special about it. Pay attention how it comes apart. Follow the manual when you put it back together. Don't use too much RTV on anything.
