Brake light issues

Post by Hspencer »

I removed the instrument cluster in 84 wag today to re-glue the gauge lenses. While I was in there I did the basic amp meter bypass, moved the yellow wire to the same stud as the red one. When I put it all back together and started it up the brake light wouldn’t go out, if I turn on the headlights it goes out. Could this be a product of the amp meter bypass or some other issue?

The brake light should only show up if you have the parking brake on or there is a pressure differential b/w front and rear systems assuming that didn't change by 1984. Looking at the 84 wiring diagrams I can't see a reason for the bypass to cause that provided the dash wiring hasn't been buggered at some point. At any point did you remove any of the connectors for the bulbs and cluster connections? If you did recheck everything is put back correctly or that the parking brake switch isn't stuck on. I'm not sure what to make of it going out when the headlights are on though.
