1981 j20 - np208 transfer case

Post by yakir.tordjman »

Hi,
Looking to service my car I'm looking for the right fluid for my transfer case.
On different discussions I'm getting different opinions.

On my 1981 workshop it says to us 10W30 motor oil (for the transfer case).

Does anyone have experience and can recommend the right fluid for the 1981 NP208?

Thank you,
Yakir

That's crazy weird. Some early aluminum cased-chain drive cases were originally specified a NON-DETERGENT 30w oil, but I've never seen one spec'd for a multi weight engine oil.
Regardless, I'm 99% sure that all New Process 208s take regular ATF.

3/4 resto, rotting faster than I've been fixing it.

Is this the JEEP service manual, the official factory service manual sold by the dealerships and provided for the dealership line mechanics? http://www.bjsoffroad.com/1981-Jeep-Fac ... _1052.html

I put ATF in my 1982 J20 with a T-18 and NP208. I'm sure that's what was in it and what was specified in the manual. There is a 1982 TSM online at http://www.oljeep.com if you'd like to check.

Hi folks,
Thanks for your replay.
I've relied on the 1981 TSM.

I've attached the section that indicates which service fluid to use.

Currently, I've found a transmission oil in it, something like 75W90 (I can identify it by it's smell).

That's the reason I'm confused :-)

I assume ATF would do the job as well as 10W30 or 80W90.
The question is which will make the transfer live longer.

Any thoughts?

Thank you

Thanks Yakir!
I wouldn't have believed it had I not seen it; motor oil in a t-case.
Regardless, I agree with all the others that regular old ATF is the best fluid for pretty much all New Process (NP) 2xx transfer cases.

Thanks Redone. I'm going to change the fluid to ATF this week.

Interestingly the Haynes manual suggests 10/30 for the 80&81 and ATF for 82 and newer.

Yeah.. that's what I've noticed.
I'm not sure if the transfer case (TC) was changed internally after 1981 or maybe the manufacturer have decided to use ATF based on knowledge collected from 1980-1981 TC.

Anyway, common knowledge suggests ATF.

Likely either a recommendation from the manufacturer to use ATF instead due to increased service life/performance or a cost decision. It wouldn't surprise me if generic ATF was cheaper than 10w-30 motor oil.
