Vacuum Leak with Ticking

Post by Locked and Loaded »

I have a 1990 Grand Wagonner with a 360. Slight ticking noise when cold. Vacuum holds pretty good when cold. When it warms up ticking noise gets louder It loses about 8 in hg of vacuum at slight throttle opening. (1300 to 1500 rpm) At this speed engine runs rough. Does it on ported and manifold vacuum. If I pull the number 7 spark plug wire ticking sound goes away but vacuum problem remains. Any ideas?

Replace the exhaust manifold gasket on that side. Get one of the copper gaskets of something better than a felpro

Check around the base of you carb with wd 40 or brake cleaner. Short sprays, work your way around base untill idle changes. That's you leak. If spray has no effect check you vacuum switches for damaged leaking ports.

I HIGHELY rec9mend you dont use brake cleaner... Ive done that and Boom caught on fire and my water hose was kinked and my 5.9 v8 ZJ was sizzling and crackling with flames until i got the hose unkinked... and when i put it out i had melted wiring and water in the transmission so i had to drop the pan.

How on earth did it catch on fire? Did you have open wiring or something that was arching?

I always use brake clean for this, and have never had any issues with fire. Anecdotal I know, but you have to use something that is flammable for the desired effect of having the engine smooth out.

Side Note: Most WD-40 made today is not flammable. It can technically burn, but they have purposely tried to make it harder to rear flashpoint.
