75 J20 Axle Gear Change

Post by Knucklehead »

My son has 75 J20 axles under his Wagoneer. They are currently geared with 3.73 gears. He is wanting to go to 4.56's. My question is, will the existing carriers work, or will then need to be replaced?

Randy's Ring and Pinion lists all the carrier breaks. https://www.randysworldwide.com/resourc ... er-breaks/

You can use "thick" gears with the stock carriers. But before ordering them, I would check the wear on the current carriers and spider/side gear. 44 year old axles are bound to have a lot of wear on those.

I had to upgrade to a 4 series carrier when i went from 3.73 to 4.10 in my d44 front. I found a good used one complete with spiders etc.. on Ebay reasonably priced. Doesn't need to be from a jeep axle necessarily, Dana is dana... [mostly]. Tgreese's link is solid, Randy's has been around forever with great service, call and ask them if you want to be sure.

Front Dana 44hd is getting a lunchbox locker. Rear may get a true track locker. Need to check the p/n on the true track carrier we have

FYI, the True Track carrier we have is out of a Ford and is 30 spline. Will need to dig it out and get the P/N off of it to verify what gears it had.

or this,

you can also get them loaded with spiders etc.. for a few dollars more.

my gear shop strongly suggested Dana/ Spicer parts over Yukon. They have had trouble with some yukon parts, mostly ring and pinion sets. I used Motive Gear sets.

You don't have to change out the carrier. Many companies make thick gears that will go onto the carrier you have now.
