1985 Jeep J20 Fuel Tank, Straps and Skid Plate

Post by darrylv »

Hello everyone. Does anyone know where to get a replacement tank and straps for an 85? My skid plate is restorable but my mounting straps are done and was thinking maybe a new tank be a good idea. I have called a few of the restoration parts guys and they are saying not available... Can an earlier tank and strap combo be used? Any help is appreciated, Darryl

Try MTS - http://www.mtscompany.com/J-truck.htm They make a plastic tank for for the '78-80 J20s that could possibly be made to fit. The main difference, as I undersand it, is the location of the sender. Call them and ask what's involved in the conversion.

The only other possibility is a Jeep junkyard, or move the tank to the location where the spare is now. Lots of these Jeeps are running aux tanks placed in that location.

Looking at your pictures, I would definitely reuse the original plastic tank. There is no reason to replace it if it is not cracked or otherwise physically damaged. There is no aftermarket supply because there is no demand - these tanks are fine indefinitely. Clean the inside with some detergent and run it. You could look for a part-out or wrecking yard for the skid plate parts. I would repair or fabricate the straps if it were mine - in the USA, there are Jeep/4x4 enthusiasts that make stuff for Jeeps as a side business. You can find them through ads or recs on your local Jeep/4x4 discussion board. Those are not complicated parts - hire someone local with metal-working skills to make new straps or repair what you have.

You could try to find someone who's parting out a J-truck that can supply what you need, or look at the junkyards. There is Montana Overland (in Montana) and Jakes in NC, though Jake's is no longer shipping. Someone local to there might be able to help with that aspect, if that's your only option.

These tanks are known for cracking. I have had two crack in my J10. But, there is no aftermarket solution for a drop in replacement. If yours is in ok condition, use it.
