Fuel Tank Strap Update

Post by MischenFSJ »

Alright, there are some updates to the whole tank strap ordeal. All I have been able to find so far is that JWGTSK-1 made by MTS. I called them and talked to their tech. I was told those are made specifically for their polymer tanks and most likely wouldn't do much, if any good for the original steel tank.

From what I can find so far, there is no replacement for a steel tank. You are limited to finding an original in good shape or making your own.

Just putting it out there in case it helps someone else in the same predicament as me and wondering if the JWGTSK-1 will work with a steel tank, which according to the manufacturer is a no. I will be attempting to make my own. Does anyone have pictures of their original to help me get an idea of what I will be making?

Thanks!

Is there any possibility one of the other Jeep models could work? My 90 XJ Cherokee uses a stap that at one end has a bar fastened to it that fits in ahole in the frame the same size then drops into a slot the same width as the stap. When I went to remove the tank the other end had threaded rods that were rusted that refused to release. Cut the and used threaded rod from Home Depot to redo . Good luck on your search.

Did the trucks ever get the same coffin style tanks the wags/cheros did? I know the original tank from my was totally different than the wagon tanks, straps included.

Would straps from a 79 cherokee work for you? I have a whole good condition steel tank/skid out back. I can go see if the straps are still there and good.

Can you snap a pic and upload it through Tapatalk? Might be the easiest for people to see what you are dealing with.

But a tank strap seems pretty straightforward, even without too much experience you should be able to fashion one pretty easily with some flat steel stock. Mainly just drilling holes and bending steel, I would imagine.

But looks like both sets of straps for both J trucks and Wagons/Cherks are available at multiple sites. Or you could give Ryan a call at BJ's. Has always been helpful and has loads of knowledge.

I didn’t know what the OP had but see now it’s a Cherokee.

For what it’s worth my j2000 has a plastic fuel tank which is held up by the original steel strap and I’ve had no issues. Did the manufacturer explain why that won’t work?

years ago, I made my own, there is a material that ressemble plumber tape, but larger and thicker, sold by length, hard to bend, so it keeps its shape.

there are different styles for skidless gas tank, I have picts in my fuel and gas link below... hard to link from a hand held

for the 74, handmade because of the ring style on the frame side

and this is an unknown probably 76 and latter

J-Truck and Waggy/Chero tanks are very different. From shape, size, filler, and straps.

I think the OP may just have to have one made. I don't recall ever seeing any for sale for the factory tanks.

PS: Sorry that your other post got screwed up MischenFSJ. That particular user is currently on hiatus.

I've got my tank out of my 77 Waggy at the moment, I can take pics/measurements of the strap. Was there a reason the one from BJ's was ruled out?

There are a couple on eBay that you might take a look at to see if they are similar to what was on yours, one 76, one 73-75.

and

Might be able to get the sellers to share the measurements with you if they look close.

Possibly. If you have the strap, can you send me a picture?

That would he very helpful. The kit from BJs is made by MTS. I called them directly and they said they doubted the kit they make would work as they made it specifically for their polymer tanks. Per recommendation of the manufacturer, it was ruled out.

This is from the parts book. Same picture 1974-79. Unfortunately there are 4 different versions of the tank strap over that period. The two straps linked to above on eBay are 5352232 for '74-75 and 5355230 for '76. '77-78 and '79 are different part numbers. Usually these onging revisions only change in some detail, so they often can be replaced with each other. Note that you also need a bracket to support each end of the tank.

Thanks Tim.

I'm going to try my hand at making one. The picture from the parts book really helps visualize what I need to do.

If you do use strap like Michel above, make sure it's good and heavy duty. You do NOT want the cheap plumbers stuff from home depot...it is not a good time to pick up a full fuel tank on the side of the road.

Yep. Its on my trailer out back buried under the snow so I might not be able to get to it until the weekend but if your looking for the strap in the pic posted above I am pretty sure I have one.

No need to traipse around in the snow on my account. I am going to try my hand at making one out of 1/8" steel. I dont seem to have the associated mount for the strap anyway and have a good idea on a plan to make something.
