'77 Cherokee Chief fuel tank strap

Post by MischenFSJ »

Mine is missing and I need to find a replacement. I have searched the internet high and low but can't seem to find the strap that fits... can someone point me in the right direction here?

Any help is appreciated!

Mishen,
Check TeamGrandWagoneer and also FullSize Jeep Parts ... both have them for around half the price.

If you have one existing strap (assuming both are the same), you could throw a jack under the tank, pull that good strap, and have two new ones made from stainless at a local welding shop probably cheaper than buying one single one from anywhere.

Just another option.

I have searched their site and can't find the straps for a 77 Cherokee... All I can find are the straps for the J10. If you have a part number or keyword available, please let me know.

Unfortunately, I don't have any of the straps at all... P.O. removed them and tossed them.

Gotcha, that will make it more difficult, for sure. You could try in the classifieds on here and IFSJA; even if you could get a rusty, but complete, strap you could have it recreated locally. Not sure what kind of timeline you're on.

I looked at TGW, and all I could find was later grand wag and truck straps. I saw replacement tanks with straps for the 70s wags/cheros, so you may be able to contact them and get just the straps. No idea if the straps for the OEM steel tanks will be the same as their replacement plastic ones, though. Also, do your do diligence and research the places you plan to purchase from. Some of them have pretty rotten reputations.

It would likely help everyone in the future to post the part number to the public. I believe this topic has been covered very recently, Phil. The purpose of the forum is not to hide information.

There is no reason to be PM'ing part numbers. If somebody asks for one in a post, you reply in that post. Otherwise it serves no purpose and doesn't help others down the road.

Thanks.

Thanks stuka... we are going to TRY a solution that MAY work. It's not posted because it isn't a solution YET.
Really riding me good, you guys. How about relaxing and even minding some own business would be good too. But I guess riding me until I quit the group or the 'cliquers' create a conflict or reason to kick me out is what I have to deal with, huh?
Thanks for your support.

Stuka has to be diplomatic, but I would be more blunt about this topic. Taking what should be a public discussion off-line to a PM actively subverts the purpose of the forum. The forum has two purposes - one is to communicate in real-time about topics we care about. The second, and perhaps more powerful purpose, is to create a searchable document that records the exchanged information. Search is a powerful tool, but it only works where the underlying data contains information.

Why go off-line? There is no reason not to share this info with everyone and contribute to both the conversation and the information stored. That's part of the bargain. This is not a business, with proprietary interests. Instead, the forum is more of a social cooperative. We are enthusiasts, and should want to support the community based on that enthusiasm.

I sometimes get PMs about technical questions (not so much here but pretty often on the CJ forums). I always direct these questions to the public forum. It's just the right thing to do. Dance with the one that brung ya.

A '77 model 10 (Wags and Cherks) has a single strap and two brackets. The strap is Jeep PN 5356420, but I expect the Jeep PNs won't help much. The strap connects to a bracket on the frame and a bolt or stud (can't tell from the book) on the inboard side. Does the OP have any of the brackets. The book says that '74-77 are all the same, if that helps.

I'm just trying to help Mischen find a solution to his problem. You have a problem with that ... obviously you do. Is this Forum about finding and creating conflicts with new members, or is it as you say "social in nature"? Preach to the old guard on here who apparently have a poker in the fire of parts sales (Conflict of Interest) or extreme ego sensitivity.
Quit kicking the bear. I'm sure Mischen will let ALL of us know if he found the right parts or not.
I personally, from past experience here, will not open myself up to anymore sniper attacks and degradation because a couple 'egos' just want to ---- on anything I post. We all have the option to not stick our noses into other peoples business ... some chose to do so. Be nice ... it's the right thing to do. Now ... because I spoke common sense ... a Moderator will close this post too.

My, you are the sensitive one. You take offense at a simple explanation that conflicts with the illusion you have constructed. No one is attacking you.
