1987 J20 rear dana 60 specs

Post by JeepManiac »

Hi all!

I am having trouble finding specs on my rear axle. I thought a FF D60 was pretty straight forward. I have grown confused through googling.

I have a 1987 J20 dana 44 front, dana 60 rear FF. Does it have 30 or 35 spline axle shafts? I'd like to purchase a true trac for it.

Stock it had 30 spline shafts, there are very few 60s that came factory with 35 spline shafts (though there are a few out there). The BEST way to confirm what you actually have, is to pull a hub/shaft and count.

Every D60-2 used in J-Trucks had 35 spline shafts, but these are semi-float axles and didn't come in J20's, only early 70's J-Trucks. J20's used the D60-3 which is of the 30 spline variety, and is a full float.

How is it an oddball? The differential itself is the same almost every other D60-3. 35 spline D60HD's are somewhat rare.

My understanding is that FORD and Dodge switched over to all 35 spline D60 in the '80-'90s and Chevy had the 14 bolt. Almost every LS or Locker listed is for a 35 spline and are $100 cheaper.

The '99 E350 D60 I've got is 30 spline, I'm pretty sure. I'll have to double check, but pretty sure.
