Post Pictures of Your External Tire Carriers

Post by Fast79Chief »

Looking for ideas for carrying my 32x12.50x15 spare outside the Chief. It's a heavy setup on an 8" steel wheel. I'd like to see what you guys have done to free up space inside. Rooftop is not an option for me, I have a bad shoulder.

Thanks a lot.

Here is the carrier I built last fall for El Choco Beasty, I based it off of the military HMMWV carrier.
Like your shoulder, I have a bad back and was not about to try and lift 150+ lbs. of 37" tire and rim in and out of the cargo area, it also takes up a huge amount of floor space.
I can unlock and lower or raise and stow the mounted tire in under 3 minutes using the ratchet.

It uses a 2 way ratcheting system to raise and lower the tire, a T-handle to hold the stowed carrier to the bumper and a nylon pad under the arm to ride on the top of the bumper. Aside from the T-handle, I also can apply downward pressure to the system. It does not move.

There are 2 swing out lock positions, 45* and 90*, a spring loaded pin holds the location.

The spare is extended down and touching the ground. This is a 35" that came with the set of rims that I bought for spares and trailer wheels, I just haven't need to mount a 37" spare yet (it doesn't leave the acreage). The four mounted are 37". My bumper top is at 36"

License plate mount is receiver hitched and removeable to get the spare on and off.

Holler if any questions

Very cool! Working with 32" tires would probably allow that pivot point to move a but closer inboard? Really nice work there Mustang!

Thanks for the compliments fellas!

Sorry Fast79Chief, but which pivot are you referring to?

The section of tube that the tire plate is mounted to could be lowered for a shorter tire.

What I would suggest if you are going to build something to your specs, use some 1/8" plywood and lumber to make a prototype that you will be happy with.
I spent a few weeks working on mine and worked angles, measurements, cut angles, pivot points, bumper height etc.

Mustang, I was referring to the swing mount that attaches the arm to the bumper. I'd be using a smaller diameter tire so I was wondering if that point of contact could be moved inboard, away from the taillight just a bit. Very cool design ... you have much more fabrication ability than I do. Let me know how much you would charge to build me one. PM me if you don't mind.
Thanks.

Ill shoot ya a PM this evening.
I was referring to the swing mount that attaches the arm to the bumper.
If you are talking about the spindle mount which is in front of the passenger tail light, moving it inboard toward the center line of the truck or toward the license plate mount in the tailgate, really wont work if you want to still raise and lower the tailgate.
I designed it so that there was an inch gap between the swung out arm and the edge of the gate when it is dropped. If it were to be moved in, the spindle pivot would make contact with the gate.
A way to get around this would to be a bumper face mount rather than the top mount.

One of the drawbacks in going with a face mount is that whatever you mount, tires, tools etc., the length grows.

I cant post a picture but I found a stock factory one from a late 60s Wagoneer in a junkyard. Sanded it, 2 coats of primer, 2 coats of black and mounted it
