New QT Brake Cones

Post by fulsizjeep »

How many folks here have bought new Novak Brake Cones from BJs Offroad for their QuadraTrac? How many have installed them and are driving that QuadraTrac?

One drawback I have found to getting new brake cones has to do with the differential case sprocket. This sprocket can not be found new or re-manufactured. Once a set of brake cones have been ground into the sprocket, chances are the sprocket is ruined. This is very common. I went through 16 differentials this summer to find 2 good case sprockets to put the new brake cones in.

I have had some words with Novak about this. I was told they would look into it back in May. No other contact since then. I can't reference the email because all my old mail went away last week with the previous hosting company for www.jubileejeeps.org.

I encourage people to contact BJs Offroad and Novak about this.

I haven't, so my comment is worthless, but I'm considering a rebuild of my 1339 and was going to get them. I'd be interested to see what people say. Doesn't the milemarker kit come with a new sprocket?

I have an opinion of the part time kit that is probably stuff for a new thread. I would not spend my money on one but the answer to your question is yes.

I wasn't going to get the part time kit as I would think the gas and wear savings is negligible, and we get some snow here so the full time is nice, but just thinking of a way to get the sprocket. What is a tell tale sign of a case that needs a rebuild? Mine doesn't skitch and other than slamming into reverse (which I may have fixed by tightening some mounting bolts), it runs ok. It just leaks. Do you sell rebuilt cases? If so, I imagine you're the supplier for BJs?

I am not a supplier for BJs and do not sell rebuilt transfer cases. My wife and I have 3 FSJs with QT that we have to maintain.

The torque bias test in the QT TSM is a good judge of the condition of the differential.

The slamming in reverse could have more to do with condition of the tranny tailshaft and the QT sun gear. The tranny tailshaft inserts in the sun gear and that 10 spline connection is a common wear point. The longer it goes, the worse it gets.

Mine does that reverse slam sometimes, but if I go from Park to Neutral then to Reverse it doesn't do it. I was thinking it's the play in my chain. My case has about 1.25" inches upward movement in the chain.

That is no bueno. I would not be driving it until the chain is replaced.

I was wondering how much chain play was acceptable. I posted that question some time ago ... seems nobody could answer it?

My personal general rule is anything over an inch of play is not acceptable.

QT TSM indicates using a gauge to check the tension.
