QuadraTrac chain play?

Post by Fast79Chief »

This question is for the guys with Quadratrac experience. How much chain 'play' up and down through the inspection hole is OK to still drive and cruise at highway speeds?

Thanks.

My personal general rule: Anything more than one inch slack is risky business.

Yes it is but refers to using a gauge which is almost impossible to find.

Zack at Z&M Jeeps told me not to worry unless you feel it slip a bit. I have a loose
chain which should be replaced according to several sources but on Zack's advice I've been running it over 2 years now with no slippage. But I don''t offroad or beat on it which is why I probably don't have a problem.

I have been in a position to use the same approach that Zack recommends. I don't like it. A chain is not that expensive compared to hunting down another functional transfer case. The looser the chain gets, the more it can bite into the sprocket teeth further increasing wear. My dear wife had her first QT explode on her from a too loose chain. That is no fun. I agree that it is one approach to take though.

I have another QT unit in the garage. I need to replace the front input seals and fully drain it before installing. The p.o. left it outside in the rain with the input open. This one has ZERO chain slack.

chain in my 5.9 98 grand cherokee quadra trac 249 is worn out. It makes rubbing noises when driving and pops switching from drive to reverse.

I havent checked the slack but i know its bad lol.

Id say if there is more then 1.2 inch play it needs replaced.

I need to get one from the salvage yard.. ive seen these cases explode when driving due to chain slack... So i dont drive that Jeep much i keep to daily driving my wagoneer

Water Bad.

I recommend opening it up anyway and make sure the water is removed. I would also open the differential and clean it out for good measure.

Water Bad. Really bad on the differential.

Yeah, I'm going to pull the low range unit off it tomorrow. I'll pull all the plugs and let it drain in multiple positions. I'll post some pics of what I find.
I do have an O-ring / Seal kit and new seals for it too.
