j10 rear crossmember

Post by FLeetFox »

For those of you that have replaced the rear frame crossmember on a J10, what have you used? I can't find C-channel the fits the 4" inside diameter, U channel doesn't exist locally. The cost to press a blank into a U is prohibitive. What fits/ can be modified ? Is there something from LMC, or Year One?? Tell me what you've done please. I want something close to original for the resto part of my resto mod.

Moving this to FSJ Tech as this is not a build thread.

What sizes of C channel can you find? Can you find slightly larger than you can then notch to fit?

Needs to be 4" inside diameter, 5" outside was too large, 4" was too small, and C channel is tapered, so it wasn't a good fit against the frame rails.

Presuming you can weld, since you plan to install this new channel. Why not cut 3 flat pieces and weld up the channel you need? You can dress the exposed weld however you like.

Two pieces of angle, one 2 x 2 1/2 x1/8 the other 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 1/8 then put a piece of 2 x 2 x 3/16 plates to shim the extra on the bottom.
I would check with a local fab shop that has a bender and see what they would charge to bend one.

may need a thicker shim due to variances in angles.

Do you have one of these near you?

Thank you for the replies. Tgreese, I can weld, but i'm looking to achieve the press formed look. XSapper, i made so calls around and no one here in town can make a U bend, plus it's $150 just to put anything on the machine.

considering "square" tube; cutting the backside off, splittling it, and welding a seam all the way down

https://www.metalsdepot.com/steel-produ ... angle-tube

I have these guys around the corner. service is good, prices are all out of whack right now though

https://www.metalsupermarkets.com/

was thinking something like this might work, just shortened:

https://www.quadratec.com/products/9120 ... 8gQAvD_BwE

but I can't find the inside measurements for the piece and I cant find the frame rail dimensions for the late CJs. Not in the TM that I can see

Please understand I'm going for the factory look here as much as possible. And dumb as it may sound, this big a$$, home built, integrated hitch bumper, is going back on once it's cleaned up:

I wonder how close this would be to fitting. I know the holes are different.

I asked, it's too short. The frame rails flare out on the J trucks, but don't on the wags/ cheros. I'm on a mission now...

Maybe post up in the wanted section?? There is probably one out there on a Jtruck that's being parted out.

You are wanting the height of the back of a CJ-7 frame rail?

Back of my '85 CJ frame rails are 2-15/16" tall.

My cheapo peely-chromy front bumper is about 3-7/8" high on the inside. The frame is about 3-5/8"

Since everybody loves a happy ending, here's what I ended up doing. I bot a YJ front bumper, cut it down to size. Spent a couple hours boring holes and shaping with a grinder and voila:

neighbor has a YJ in the yard, stopped by with a tape measure and it was close enough. fit is good, almost identical to the original. I am pleased.

Nice, does it seem as heavy duty as the original? Or is it actually heavier?

XSap, same thickness,3/16. Only downside was the "made in C*&$%a" label... I may gusset it on the inside when i put the hitch bumper back on, we'll see, this truck won't be used for pulling anything really, especially with the lift.

Whatever I replace mine with will be gusseted on the inside also. I think the originals were probably from a higher grade of steel and/ or tempered. If I get mine where I think I might it will just be out of A36 and I will need to gusset and probably put a stiffener on the back.

On my short bed the PO used the Cross member to pull/be pulled bending it into a V. I used a 6x4 square tube in its place and welded in a hitch receiver and D rings. It doesnt look OEM but is much better than what was there. I also welded tabs to it to mount a small 4x4 tappered bumper.
