Does anyone know stub shaft lengths of a 10spline closed knuckle 44 vs stub length of a 19 spline open knuckle 44 and what year u-joint sizes interchange? Basically I am looking for a 19 spline stub shaft that is longer than my current 10 spline ones that uses the same u-joint i currently have. My current axle is a '71 D44 closed knuckle. I am swapping 1980 J20 8lug discs over. Everything fits and clears fine. Only issue is stub shaft length is too short and the spline count is incorrect. If anyone knows off the top of their head or has a J10/20 stub laying around could you shoot me some measurements?
The stub shaft is most likely too short because of the drums vs disc brakes. Even year for year they were different. My old Cherokee came with drums. Got full outer setup to go to discs, and the stubs were too short.
Found out from kaiserman what i need to do the swap. For now i am just doing a 5x5.5 disc swap because i have pretty much everything at this point but will swap to 8 lug disc in the future either with this old front axle or if i decide to build the HD44 open knuckle housing in my shed eventually
I personally would not bother with the 8 lug stuff on the old axle. Build the newer one. You will be stronger in every way, and get a way better turning radius.
Thats pretty much how my mind is thinking also. I will build that 60 rear this winter and swap it under the truck, and temporarily run wheel adapters up front until the front is built. Side note, i have a 3.73 down low mileage detroit locker for a 44 in great shape I would trade for a detroit for a 60 with 30splines any gear size. Just putting it out there
