loss of power when peddle is pressed down

Hey y'all,

I'm running into some trouble with my 84’ J10 with inline 6 and FT999 trans. I took it to work the other day and the truck loses all power when the peddle is pressed more than ¼ to 1/3 of the way to the floor. Barely made it up a small hill. The engine is working hard but none of that power is making its way to the wheels. I'm relatively new to the truck so I'm not sure if it's making any unusual noises. I’m assuming it’s a transmission issue or fuel system issue but I wanted to get your expert opinions before I start fooling around with anything there. Let me know if you need more info. I hope someone here can help. Thanks!

If the engine is stock, it most likely has the computer controlled Carter BBD carb. These carbs are infamous for having issues. I doubt it is anything related to your transmission.

High well does it idle? Is it smooth and at the correct RPM?

The three items I would check is:
1: Check for vacuum leaks. Get some brake clean or the like, and with the engine running, spray it around any vacuum hoses and the base of the carb. If the engine RPM changes, you have a vacuum leak there.
2: Verify the timing is correct.
3: If both of the above check out, then the carb may be the issue. As it is computer controlled, they can be tricky to troubleshoot. You should have a light on your dash that says "check carb". If this lights up, it typically means there is an issue with the O2 sensor (Yes, you have one with this carb), or the feedback system. The ECU can also mess with timing. All these combined items is why I have replaced the carb with a Weber, and the ignition with an HEI on my J10.
