85 Grand Wagoneer Steering Box

Post by 85wagPitt »

Hi, I'm new tot he site and to FSJ ownership. I just picked up an 85 GW. Most everything is great, but the steering box is leaking oil and my steering is very sloppy/loose/sticky etc. Questions are:
1. best place to buy an inexpensive replacement?
2. how hard/easy is it to replace it myself? (I'm pretty mechanical)

Also, any other words of advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi,
Your Wagoneer looks great.

Like everyone says....
Welcome to the madness...
My word of advice is "run"

I haven't recently had the joy of replacing the steering sector but here is a link to a thread that has some good information on how to remove it as well as sources for replacements.

if you are mechanically inclined then you can always rebuild it and tighten it up...here is thread on that...(courtesy of Tgreese)

I would do my own reman first - the parts are readily available. Lots of how-to online - https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+ ... ering+gear

If you don't want the typical A1-Cadone reman, these guys seem to be highly regarded http://www.redheadsteeringgears.com/ - no personal experience.
