Rear trim clips

Post by mhubbard »

Hey fellas,
My GW is being de-trimmed this week in preparation for painting. The body guy took the large chunky trim that surrounds the upper tailgate area off and told me that the clips that held it on did not survive. Does anyone know where I can find replacement clips? I think he said I needed 17 of them. Does that sound familiar to anyone?

I would include a pic, but my phone is acting up.

Many thanks!
Mike

17 seems like a lot, he would have had to destroy every one of them. Even then that seems like more than there was from the factory.

They don't exist new, used is your only option.

Sounds like he was unnecessarily rough. That and very impatient. I'm a noob and only broke 2 on mine when I pulled it off.You should need about 12 at the most iirc.

IIRC about 10 to 12 for mine , so 17 is a good approximation

Go to you local hardware store and get what are called trim screws. They usually have black and chrome. Could be pained to match your interior color. They'll hold the trim better than those clips as chances are it's the cardboard that didn't survive not the metal clips.

I’ve parted out a lot if these things, never had a single one of those clips break or be bad. Sounds to me like he lost them or tossed ‘em by mistake. Ask to see them, I bet he cannot produce one.

If a Cherokee is the same I could pop the trim off my parts rig and see if any are good. I'd give them to you if they are.

Depending on where the OP is, it is VERY common for those clips to rot. I'd say half of the ones I've pulled off parts trucks have been junk.

OP, it's the same clip from 63-91 for trucks and wagons for the rear trim, so you have a pretty broad range to search from at least.

Thanks for all the guidance, fellas. I’m gonna run down to the body shop mid week - I hope to see what survived his detrimming. I’ll likely have to reach out to a couple of you if they’re that beat up.
