Service manual?

Post by mtimmer »

New to FSJ's and was wondering if anyone has used the service manual, and if so how do you like it? If that one isn't good which one would you recommend?

I wrote this article which may be of help to you - http://earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?th ... uy.123064/

IMO the only worthwhile manual is the factory service manual for your year. Some are online but you can buy a CD-ROM copy at RockAuto for about $25.

It will help to put year. model and equipment in your signature file.

As said above depend on year. For 74 and later with QT, I think that 78 was a better write up than 74, I have not seen the 79 TSM. The factory honed the debugging part of the cluster troubleshooting very well. For the noob, a generic has sometimes better explanation with better pictures such as the Haynes. The Chilton is terrible with poor graphic for the electrical schematics, but it covers a broad range of years.

We need to know what year.

There is a '79 manual on the Tom Collins site, but it's not going help if it's a later vehicle. You need the copy for your year. The Bishko CD-ROM for each year is cheap at RockAuto. You need the copy for your exact year, especially when working on the fuel or electrical systems.

Sorry I shouldn't have been so vague. I have a 75 J20, with a 360, T-18, Dana 20 case, 60 rear, and 44 front.

There's a '76 TSM to read and download for free at http://www.oljeep.com - that will be pretty close. I would get the '75 manual on CD-ROM too.

Nice truck. I own a similar '82.
