The M23 (FSJ M20) is just as strong as a D44. Technically the R&P are quite a bit stronger on the M23. I have some side by side photos of the gear sets if you wanted to see. But in short the M20/23 have an 8.9” ring gear, and the pinion shaft is the same size as a D60.
BUT, the J-Truck version is far too wide for any little Jeep. It’s roughly 8.5” wider than a waggy rear axle. And is wider than a WT Cherokee rear axle.
The FSJ Corporate axle (M23) has one-piece shafts (welded on the back side) and heavier tubes than the CJ Corporate axle (M20). Don't let the reputation of the M20 sway your opinion of the M23.
