Some tire shops won't even mount them on a 7" wide wheel. If they do, they won't wear well at all. To get them to have all of the tread touching the road, you have to run them at a pretty low air pressure.
And yes, they will rub more. Mostly on the front springs when turning (even on a WT) and in the rear tub. An 8" wide wheel pulls the tire out 1/2". Most 15x8's also have a bit less back spacing than stock, which will also pull them out more.
Maybe it's not worth trying to use the stock rims. I have some 15x8 steel rims I could use but will need to measure the back spacing. Do you think that is wide enough? I'd like to avoid buying new ones

I have 33X12.50X15 on my Cherokee. Some guy in Reno said do it, so I did!
In this particular case he wasn't asking if they would fit his vehicle, just if the stock 7" wife wheels would be ok for 35's.
However, now that you ask this, and Hendo answered with J10, the ultimate answer is that 12.50's BARELY work with 8" wide wheels. They won't even mount with 7" wide wheels. My tires are about 3/8" from the rear springs. I should have 9" wide wheels to better clear.
Seems to me narrower wheels would clear better? Though they would appear to bulge more seems to me it should be just that, appearance.
Say you took this to an extreme and put them on a 2" wide wheel. They would bulge like crazy but the sidewalls would be pulled in.

It's a product of the backspacing. Both an 8" and a 10" wheel will have the same backspacing, about 3.75" unless you pick a non-standard wheel. The tire on the narrower wheel bulges out more past the plane of the bolt circle.

wife wheels. I haven't heard that before. thats a good one. When I bought the truck it had 33's on 15x8s. The backspacing seems to be about 4". I don't think there were issues. Also had a 3" lift
I think I found some 15x8s that will work. They have the right bolt pattern and the guy is getting back to me on the backspacing. I've been googling the centre bore and getting mixed answers. does anyone know what it is for a 79? thanks
Don't think that will work. Are you dead set on a certain style of wheel? I know almost all steelies are around $40-50 per wheel all over the net. Pretty cheap if you ask me. Come in all sizes and specifically the 15x8 6 on 5.5 with 3.75" backspacing and 4.25" bore. Pretty standard stuff.
I'm beginning to wonder if I know what I'm talking about. I understood center bore to be the hole in the middle. Have a look at the attached pictures of the stock rim and hubs. They are a lot less than 4.25 in diameter. What am I missing?
