They do have a taper but it's not drastic. I put the larger end at the rear

I bet they put it in upside down to get the shock mount rotated. I have tapered blocks in my truck, and the shock does bolt up, but just barely.

Was I right to put the tapered side at the rear?

Yes, moves the yoke upward to decrease driveshaft angle.

Normally the narrower side go to the front, to rotate the pinion up. However, that also messes your shock mounts up more. Really, I think you could go with 2" blocks that have no taper at all and be ok. The trucks are long enough that pinion angle isnt as much of an issue.

Guess I will put them in upside down for now. I still have to put the rest of the truck back together. Is it true that I can't torque the suspension until it's on the ground with the full weight of the truck on it?

Looks like they don't fit upside down either

Could you put a shock bolt in the large frame hole to left of picture?

Yes, you do not want to torque the suspension until weight is on it. You may have to cut the shock mounts off and reweld them off the back of the tube. Yours seem rotated farther under than mine. Which would not surprise me.

I can accept having to move the mounts if I was doing a custom lift. It just seems really odd to me that it wouldn't line up when manufactured for the truck. I threw some tires on and let it sit on them. Maybe it will affect things but I haven't had a chance to check. Probably insufficient weight given its just the frame.

Even if they fit with weight on the axle it'll mash the shock when the suspension cycles. Anyhoo the axle moves back when the spring compresses so the interference would get worse, I'd think.

Is the locating pin in the springs off center and are they on backwards? Sorry if this was already discussed. I didn't look back.

Edit: Oops, I see the title of the thread asks that question. Did you measure the location of the pin?

While the axle does move back some, the pinion will also point down as the suspension compresses. I just think the guy at the factory welded them too far under. This is not the first time J-Truck owners have come across this.

That's sort of what they said at Rusty's when I contacted them yesterday. The short story is that the springs need weight on them and will settle a bit. Only smaller shocks will fit without denting. They said they would replace them if they had any trouble. So I guess I wont have that part buttoned up until I have the body work finished.
