1965 Wagoneer

Post by Ribs »

Looking for some help (aren’t newbe users always wanting help?).

I have a 65 Jeep Wagoneer with the Tornado engine. Hasn’t moved for awhile but it does run. The power steering assembly leaks. The 65 OEM manual refers to a Power Cylinder. The power steering hoses do not connect to the steering box. I have failed on finding any steering parts referred to as the power cylinder. Actually, I haven’t even found a picture other than what is in manual.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated

Sounds like you have the old Ross power steering setup? Parts are hard to find but do some internet searches for info. It’s possible to convert to a more common Saginaw style but not easy and I don’t have firsthand experience with it.

Look here http://oljeep.com/edge_parts_man.html at the '62-73 Jeep J-series catalog. This will show you the parts with the original Jeep part numbers. There are specialty sellers that rebuild power steering parts that cater to the classic car market. Likely they can help you, but it won't be cheap. Look online for "power steering rebuilders" or check in Hemming's Motor News.

if that is a hydraulic cylinder directly attached to the steering linkage like I remember(I had a 65,but it was 50 yrs ago) a local hydraulic cylinder shop may be able to help you. That type I'm remembering is basically a small version of a heavy equipment cylinder. You may be able to find general use packing for it cheap online by dimension and redo it yourself. I buy all my seals for my heavy equipment from mfpseals.com for a fraction of what the dealers want...and they are the same seals ( I find their markings on all of my OEM seals)

It looks like a steering damper with the 2 hoses attached on the end. Yes, I think you are right, I will have to rebuild it (well... my son will have to since I am not driving to Phoenix AZ to do this).
Thanks
