New ball stud install spinning

Post by Hendo2.5 »

As you can tell I'm putting my front end back together. I've installed the ball joints in the knuckle and am following the install instructions in the technical manual. It says to torque the lower ball joint to 75 lbs but it is spinning with the nut when I turn it. I've attached pics. It's not installed on the truck so I can't put a jack under it. Any suggestions? Thanks

You'll have to find some way to put pressure on it. C clamp may work or ratchet strap? Or try tightening the upper a little to apply pressure.
Also, an impact will work better than trying to use a ratchet or wrench.

Use a flat blade screwdriver to hold shaft and a wrench on nut till tight enough to use socket.

i can't seem to get enough leverage on the screw driver to keep it from skipping out of the slot when I turn the wrench. The but us about 2/3 of the way down the shaft do there is some good resistance

Been a long time since I've done this but aren't you supposed to get the lower one tight then adjust the upper seat?

Yes it's supposed to be bottom joint, split sleeve and then top nut torqued to 75,50 and 100 respectively. Once I got the bottom one right I the did the top over again.
