fuel fill hose issues

Post by KJ Ryu »

I replaced the fill hose on my DD about 2.5 years ago. I run premium non-ethanol fuel when I'm not out-of-town so may have put 50 gallons of ethanol-blends in it since but, the new hose is already more dry-rotted and cracked than the original was. So my question is, is there a better option than the replacement rubber from BJ's or TGW? Or is there something I could treat the rubber with to protect it?

I use aerospace 303 protectant on anything rubber, vinyl, plastic that needs rehydrating/restored.

I bought my filler hoses from TGW. Just last year so I can't tell you how it holds up yet, or probably never. The weather is mild on the coast. Not dry, hot and cold.

I used good quality marine grade fuel hose from my local marina on mine. It's a reddish-brown/orange color but no dry rot 4 years later.

Unfortunately, it's the hose with the flange end, so a straight tube won't work without modifying my fill cap. I'll see if I can find some of that 303 stuff. Thanks, guys.

OK, Walmart's website says they carry it but, after wandering around for an hour, I couldn't find the 303 protectant. Can someone tell me what section it would be in? Or, even better would be a store to buy it that isn't Walmart. Ace Hardware should have it, right?

I think they have it in the boat section or car detail I can't recall. Call em and check. Most good boating stores should carry it. I bought a gallon of it about 5 years ago for $47 online.

Where did you get the one that's now leaking?
There's a slight possibility that they are not all from the same batch or vender. For example,I know BJ's has sourced replacement radiators from a different manufacturer than Crown. So its possible.
Looks like TGW's are repackaged hoses from Crown, but BJ's I'm not sure.

Mine came from BJ's. Looks like the "salt" they use on our streets was the problem. It was only dry-rotted where it gets splashed.

I have a thrift side and also had the same problem. I got a 2" muffler pipe bent at 90 deg. had one end expanded at the muffler shop to 2.250" to match the tank.(needs to be as close to the bend as possible) Welded in a bung for the vent, it think it was 3/8" npt. I cut the upper end a little long and it sticks up into the filler neck a little. made a rubber gasket to fit between the filler neck and the body and the pipe. I put I in in the fall and it works good so far. It will not hold gas if you overfill it. but otherwise it is ok
