Auto Trans

Post by Matt24601 »

I pulled the pan off my 83 Wagoneer transmission to clean and install a new gasket. I noticed a hole/Crack. Also a stuck in chunk of something. Definitely more concerned with the hole.

What is this from?
How serious?
What repair options do I have?

Perhaps something jammed up in the valve body? Pressure built and pushed out creating the hole?
My be able to just swap in a new VB and call it good?

So I've been Youtubing changing the valve body and it doesn't look overly challenging. I'm not sure though. I'm ok turning wrenches, suspension lifts, water pumps, etc., but I'm not an "internal repairs" type of guy. Is this a difficult fix? Internal transmission and engine work has always been a bit intimidating.

Was the trans working fine before you opened it up?

Can't really say. Bought it a couple of years ago and just drove it onto and off the trailer. I was changing gaskets fluids etc when I found the hole.

Can't really say for sure but it looks to me like the "hole" is just some bad cast flashing and wouldn't worry about it. Change the filter while you're in there, top off the fluids, and see if it works.

I don't believe you have a problem with that casting hole. There is a separator plate between the outer and inner VB halves which essentially blocks off that area to fluid pressure.

Well, I'll leave it as is. I prefer buying a new filter and gasket over a new transmission anyway.
