Body Mounts and bushing replacement

Post by Rinkle_Stinkle »

I'm looking to replace the body mounts and bushings. I have done one a while ago on a 90 YJ and that was pretty easy. I would imagine this will be a little more difficult.

Questions:
1. do I loosen them all first and use a jack to relieve pressure like on the YJ?

2. what are the hardest to reach areas and do I need any specialized tools for it?

3. is it worth me doing it over a shop? (id imagine that's a yes)

4. if I had a shop do it what do you think the labor cost would be?

5. if I do it, any recommendations on techniques or if you know of a video or thread please share the link as I'm a visual learner.

Thanx for the info!!!!! :fsj:

Why do you want to replace the bushings?

What year? When they went to the one less mount per side the access holes in the floor no longer lined up with the bolts so you can't get oil on the bolts.

The captive nuts were intended for assembly and won't hold if the threads are rusty.

If you want to proceed I'd drill a small hole above each bolt so you can get some Kroil or PB Blaster on them. You can spray the bolt heads from below all day but not much is going to get up to the threads.

they are pretty old and dry rotting very badly. I'm doing a lot of work on it and once completed I would rather have addressed everything needed in the next ten years... I believe these won't last that long.

1988. Yeah my biggest fear is the bolts themselves... I'd imagine I'm looking at years of stubbornness just waiting to challenge me.

I haven't decided yet. before I order I would like to know what I'm getting into.

Mine aren't "crushed" yet but I foresee that in the next 5 years.

Go put some your favorite penetrating oil on them now. Thank me later.

I did pretty good on my try. I got 11/12 and on the last one on the passenger side I broke it. I took it to a shop so they could make a cut, bend out a flap, take care of the mount, then fold it back and weld it. NP for them.

I've posted a bunch of info on the later mounts.

Also some photos of the project in this thread

I did not remove the entire body - but that is the right way to do it. I did 'em as needed. One day I'd like to revist the rear ones and do them better.

You may have noticed the front mount on each side is different than the others. Some kits don't have the correct fronts.

BJ's says theirs is correct and the pichers look like it.

Last I looked TGW's is not.

What i wanna know is do they sell the actually mount welded to the frame.. I have 3-4 of them on mine where the rubber sandwich has caused the metal to rol away so while the rubber is still there the mount isnt lol. I can lift and push down the bumper in the rear because both very rear mounts no longer hold the body on anymore

so what if I find out the mounts are good and just want to replace the bushings... still the same techniques right? remove bolts and lift just enough to slide them on and replace bolts?

Group,
Hello, I am new to this site! I recently started the process of trying to replace my worn out body bushings on my 87GW. Predictably, some of my bolts failed at the top nut. I was wondering if there is another option to reach the top bolts without cutting through the floor board? I recently had body work done to fix the rusted floor boards and I do not want to cut through this work I just paid for. Can they be reached from underneath?
