I've got a 1972 J-4000 with the AMC 304 and 3 speed transmission. The clutch linkage has a bell housing clutch fork pivot, spring and clutch fork pivot ball. Can those be replaced without removing the transmission?
You cannot replace the fork without pulling the transmission. The fork is held to the release bearing with a clip that you can only access from inside the bell housing.
Fortunately the transmission (Borg-Warner T-15) is not terribly heavy. Support the bellhousing and take down the driveshafts, cross-member, transfer case and transmission in that order. A floor jack will work fine, but be careful not to drop the TC or trans on you.
