Emptying a gas tank

Post by SkylinePCG »

Bone stock 86 GW. Hasn't run in about 15 years and I don't want what's in the gas tank getting into the carb. What's the best way to empty the tank?

Can I move the fuel line off the carb and into a 5gallon tank, letting the jeeps fuel pump empty the tank?

Or should I pull the pump from the cargo area and siphon it out from there?

Or siphon it out from the filler neck?

Thanks ahead of time!

Besides dropping the tank (Which is the only way to empty and clean it completely), Pulling the floor cover and sending unit is your best bet. If you have a long enough siphon hose you should be able to suck out any muck sitting on the bottom. Since these tanks are plastic there is no rust issue to speak of :)
I would suggest that if you siphon, it helps to have the vehicle on an incline or jackstands so the sludge/varnish gets washed to one end where your siphon hose should be placed.

I might add that it would be a good idea to pull the fuel filter and clean out the lines.
