Help. My clutch pedal dropped to the floor.

Post by Jonnyworld »

I was just driving and noticed the clutch pedal felt sloppy. Then it dropped to the floor when I pressed it to get out of neutral at a light. I had to kill the engine and start in 1st to get to a parking lot. I looked under heath and it seems the clutch fork is loose in the bellhousing. Is this a common issue? Can it be fixed without removing transmission. 82 Wagoneer 360 4spd manual.Image

Typically when the clutch pedal drops it means the linkage came undone. Did you trace the linkage from pedal to clutch?

Yes the linkage is ok. It is the clutch fork that is out of whack. I'm guessing it's the throw out bearing. I did hear a slight ticking coming from that area for the last few days. But it was so quiet I really had to listen for it. I was just curious if there is a pivot the fork may have jumped off of inside the bell. Probably wishful thinking. 197000 miles. I've had it for 3000 and the clutch has been working perfect till the noise a few days ago.

Luckily I was able to crank it in gear and time the traffic lights to drive it the 8 miles back to the house.

Besides a failed linkage and fork, it's possible you have a roller-assist clutch and the rollers have been drawn out by throwing the clutch at high RPM which will cause it to be engaged all the time.

Guess I'll have to let it sit for a little while till I get a chance to drop the transmission.

You were right. Kind of. The arm on the pivot bar cracked. Crazy because it's almost 1/4" thick and 1" wide steel.Image

Ah wow, have not seen the arm break like that before. May be worth adding a brace or something too.

I'll add that I've never seen that failure either. Notice it's away from the weld? Crazy.

I'd be checking out the linkage angles. Looks like something was in a bind. How stiff was your pedal before that happened?

It must have been a defect in the metal from the factory. That took a really long time to break. Because it was a clean break. And this is not an abused Wagon

It has been driving great. Pedal was smooth and easy. Just gave in all of a sudden. I'll be watching it.

If you look closely, it seems that that upper part of the crack has been cracked for awhile. Notice the different shading in the crack.

Good eye. I did notice that after looking for a while.
