What is stock height for 89GW

Post by PaulD »

Trying to decide how much my 89 GW is sagging from stock height. Current heights at center of wheel wells are
Left front = 30"
Right front = 30.5"
Left rear = 27.5"
Right rear = 28.5"
Obviously the left side is lower than the right (gas tank?). Visually not noticeable in front but rear is very noticeable. I think I need new springs in rear but not sure about the front. How far off are these measurement from stock (with stock tires).

Measure from the center caps to the fenders. If you measure from the wheels youll get an in accruate reading based on tire tread size

Also the quarter panels are 2 3/4 inches lower BY DESIGN if you look closely and even measure from the top of the wood trim to the fender, and then top to quarter panel wheel wells youll see the fender is 10 inchs and quarter panel is 12 3/4.

So this famous so called waggy rear sag... isnt really a rear sag... the BODY panels in the rear are just lower thats all. In actuality the front is even with the rear if you take the 2 inches on the quarter panels off (the drivers side front/rear will be lower because of the gas tank though) If you dont believe me look closer... Notice the wood trim is shorter in the front and taller in the rear ? Now measure it youll see. Im surprised no one has noticed this

I actually have a brand new made in USA stock OEM leaf springs (not that crown brand ) front and rear. And my height at the center of the wheel caps to the wheel wells is 18 front and 16 1/2 rear.

If you are lower then this, then your springs are sagging

read this thread, i have pics and info on new springs

Using your "middle of wheel caps" approach which I like better than to the ground give me following compared to your heights

Left rear = 14" (vs 16.5")
Right rear = 15" (vs 16.5")
Left front = 16" (vs 18")
Right front = 17" (vs 18")

My springs still look good - not flat or gapped like your old ones but I plan to use my GW as a frequent driver so I think I will go ahead and install new ones to gain back the 1" - 2.5" to make it stock height. Like you, I plan to use General Springs front & rear. The only question I have left is should I consider a beefier spring on left than the right. Might help the left side sag as long as it did not make it ride strange.

The rear fender openings are smaller, so normal for it to look a bit lower in back. And the fuel tank being on the left side makes them lean to the left over the years. my old Cherokee was the same way.

yea even with my new springs. and my load cartying coil over shocks i still lean to the left slightly bout .5 inch with a tank full of gas.

youre springs seem about an inch low or so compared to mine. That isnt too bad. My old ones were down almost 2 1.2 to 3 inches almost and springs were inverted.

the only thing about generalspring i dont get is what are the 97-493 rear springs. The ones i ordered were 97-485 and this 97-493 are news to me. and apon inspecting the specs theh are 100% identical in measurements and load so i dont know why they have a different name... The only thing is the 97-485 have a 6 3.4 inch arch. the 97-493 dont list an arch so i dunno..
