I have a 1990 Grand Wagoneer and the AC clutch seems to be engaging but I'm not sure if the AC system that year was already R134 or was it still the older R12? I'd like to recharge it to see if the AC system still works but want to fill it first.

All FSJ from the factory were R12. As stated above, check the fittings to be sure if it's been converted or not. R12 fittings are small threaded fittings. R134a fittings are larger "quick -connect" fittings.

134a wasnt used until 93 or 94 on the grand cherokees.
Yours has a newer style comoressor like my 90 vs older wagoneers that were prone to leaking. But its still r12.
The r12 refill is the hose on the top you need to unscrew the fill port. Unscrew the cap for the tab to open the valve and get a wrench or some vice grips on the valve and then put the gauge on and open the valve to get a reading check.
You csn go to autozone and buy r12 to 134 convertion tips. So if you dont have a r12 gauge you can neasure it with a 134 gauge.. but dont put 134 in. Put the r12 knob back on.
Youre hoing to habe yo buy r12 cans on ebay which are selling from 30-40$ a can or make a post on craigslist to find someone. Thays what i did and he has sold me 3 cans for 25 each snd even put it in for me.
It took two cans on a empty syste. To completetly refill it and be ice cold.. it lasted an entire year and is still cold but i had him put in one more can a week ago as pressure went from 40-50 to about 30 in a year. I dont mind spending 25$ a year vs thr huge costs in changing out the system to 134a.
Plus 134a is being phased out... everyone should be stocking up in 134a cans from walmart. Last year 134 was 2 or 3$ a can or 70$ for a 30 lbs bottle now this year is 5$ a can or 130$ a 30 lbs bottle.
Reason is because in 2017 is the start of the phase out to r1234y refrigerant and 2020 is the last year so whatever is left is overstock that these companies have been stocking up on. And the U.S gov is going to be putting a huge tax on r134 i expect prices fir a regular can. To be around 15$ or so in the next few years vs 4-5$ like its at
