89 GW brake disc cover--is it important?

What appears to be a simple stamped metal cover for the brake disc fell off my GW. Is this an important item? Assuming I lost the bolt that holds it on, did that bolt hold anything else on?

They should be welded onto the caliper brackets, but they are far from necessary. There was another thread about this in just the last few days. If it rusted off, that's an issue worth looking into, but I wouldn't go through the hassle of replacing it otherwise.
