I know that I have seen this discussion on here before, but I am having no luck finding it.
I need to replace the tank on my 1980 J-10, the notorious plastic tank that cracks at the top and has the front filler as well as the offset driveshaft.
Can anyone remind me, what tank can I buy new that actually fits this application, without moving the tank from it's stock location?

MTS has a tank that they say will work http://www.mtscompany.com/J-truck.htm - the 0013. It's front fill, but the sender is on top. I suspect the main problem with their tank is the sender on top needs extra clearance, and you have to space the tank down a little. Pretty sure someone on here called MTS and talked with them about it (they ask that you call and talk to them before ordering), but I don't recall the outcome.

tgreese, I took a look at the tank you are describing, I don't think it will work. My driveshaft is offset and the stock tank has a concave side to allow clearance for the driveshaft. Everything else looks right.
If memory serves correctly, there was a tank that had the correct shape but it was a top filler so you had to lower the tank slightly. Anybody got any info on this?

AFAIK MTS is the only company making plastic tanks for these trucks. There is no source for steel tanks, since the original tank was plastic. You may be able to use a steel tank from a '79-ish truck (used only, I presume), since it will have a front filler. However, you'd be in the same fix as with the MTS plastic tank. Did you call MTS? They are willing to discuss this issue ...
They are offering free information, whether you buy or not
Suspect you are recalling discussion of this tank.
Also, I doubt the driveshaft clearance of the '79 tank is any different from the later trucks. You're assuming there is a clearance problem from the picture ... and you know what they say about "assume." I suggest you don't assume, but instead measure. MTS will probably give you the measurements of the '79 tank if you ask. Having a '77 and '82 truck, I can measure the driveshaft clearance, but not until this weekend.

Your 80 should have a centered rear axle, not an offset. But this actually makes clearance a bigger issue than with earlier models.
I may call MTS tomorrow. With a top sending unit would need some way to drop the tank down but still have it be secure, since the skid plate holds the tank in place.
My '77 J10 has a Dana 20 and a centered rear axle, IIRC. This would have the same driveshaft clearance a later Jeep with a NP transfer cases ... I'd thnk. As above, I can measure the difference in a couple of days.

70's FSJ's with the D20 still had the rear axle offset. The t-case is centered, axle is not. WT/J-trucks actually used the same rear axle for the QT and the D20. The Narrow tracks used a different rear axle.
As long as those work in a short bed J10 I will take one! I do not need the skid plate/straps, as mine should be fine. I am sure he will take the other. Will PM you.

Stuka, your tank/skid mount are in-route to Cali... Thanks for the opportunity
