3 pt rear seat belt Question

Post by rirealtor »

Looking to add the shoulder option to my 75; headliner is out and the mounting hole is verified intact. Looks like there are 2 primary vendors which supply this and I'm looking for ease of availability and install.
The belt will be for my daughter ( 8 yr old) so I'm thinking the "long sash" option would be ideal as it puts the belt lower, across the chest. Yes?
The retractable option involves some drilling on rear wheelwell. Any issues with the non retractable? I would think it would tuck between seat and wheel well when not in use anyway.
As always, your ideas, opinions and vendor reviews are greatly appreciated.

I am in the process of reinstalling my interior and can give you a few tips on the rear shoulder seat belt... and may be slightly cheaper than some of those kits.

First you found the "hidden" bolt under the headliner.

All new seat belts were ordered from Seat Belt Planet (disclaimer My Jeep is not a exact replica of 1982 when it was manufactured). The rears were 110 inches long, with an 8 inch shoulder extension and 12 inch sleeve (plastic sleeve was not used to go through the seat). The 8 inch drop allows a better position to hold people/ children down in the seat rather the higher roof mount.

The retractor was secured to the top side of the wheel well with a seat belt plate welded to the inner portion of the well and a 90 degree floor bracket was used. It was placed right below the shoulder bolt for straight extension.

The top shoulder bracket uses a shoulder bolt that fits into the factory bolt hole.

The bottom of the seat belt will be placed under the rear seat latches (circle peices that the seat striker hits. Same spot at the original lap belt.

My seat belt order cost around $450 for total of 6 belts and hardware. Thought that was pretty reasonable considering the old ones were pretty nasty.

I will be back to work on finishing my carpet and rear panels and hopefully have the rear seat and belts back installed.

One other thing. Both of my kids are still in car seats. I swipe the child seat hooks from a mazda 626 and welded a plate under the rear floor. Now I have 2 car seat hooks exposed for the rear tether of the car seat. Just trying to bring the truck to some current safety standards.

Good luck!

I used a non retractor shoulder belt so I don't have to add any new mount points. Sort of inconvenient for the passenger but violet doesn't mind too much :)
