The Isuzu rodeo for some years used a Dana 44. Some were leaf sprung, some had coils. They are about perfect wms to wms for a NT jeep. Have thick axle tubes, usually 4:10 or 4:30 gears, and disc brakes. They used to be everywhere in junkyards and could be had very cheaply. I think they would be too narrow for a wide Trac/J truck.BCRAWLER wrote:Not to side track, seen several posts suggesting same. What is that axel and will it work in a pickup as well as the Cherokee?
The book says 2.73, with 3.31 optional. This is with the T-176 or T-5. Same for the V8.Jonnyworld wrote:What gear ratio would likely come in an 83 6cyl manual. My 82 360 manual came with 273. Im looking at buying a parts car and hoping for lower gears or at least past the carier break

My 83 was 272 with the t-177 and it was a struggle. Worst part was when I visited Colorado and had to go up 285 to Conifer. Lots of 2nd gear chugging and an occasional 1st gear redline assault trying to do better than 30mph. Hopefully you have 331s.... Though I'm not sure how much better that will be.Jonnyworld wrote:Thanks for all the input. I gues ill just have to open it up and check. The 3.31 would sure get me going better with 33's. Till im ready to pay to redo the axles

He has to change the carrier for the rear for ANY other gears besides 2.73 (well, and 2.53 or whatever the cars came with). For the front, yes he can put anything in with the advent of thick gears.Tatsadasayago wrote:With your current axles you can go up to 3.90 ratio without having to change carriers or use ring gear spacers. 3.73s are the one of the most commonly available aftermarket gearsets for the Dana 44 and AMC model 20. With 33s this ratio will definitely help out your bottom end but still allow you to roll at freeway speeds without revving your engine to death.
I forgot about the tall gearsets having their own specific carriers. Thanks for the correction.Stuka wrote:He has to change the carrier for the rear for ANY other gears besides 2.73 (well, and 2.53 or whatever the cars came with).
