I'm really new to AMC. My gauges and dash lights are flickering. When I turn the dimmer they flicker, when I hit bumps they flicker. Bad ground? dirty circuit board? bad headlight switch? It's probably something so simple but the unfamiliar has me stumped.
Take the screws up out of the instrument panel. Pull it out so you can reach your left hand behind it and wiggle some wires and see if it shorts out again.
Can be broken wire, dirty or loose ground on the board or a ground wire, loose connector pins on the board, loose connector for dash lights, or other things you can't even think of.
Once you get your hand feeling around and can isolate the source, then you can fix it.

x2 on the headlight switch. The rheostat inside gets dirty/corroded/loose over time.

I replaced the headlight switch in my '82 J20 recently. The dash light dimmer rheostat came apart and fell out in pieces. These switches are available and reasonable, like $20. If the switch is ok, clean it with some spray electronic contact cleaner and exercise it vigorously,

On 85 and older, 5-10 mins. You pull the knob off, your unscrew the bezel on the front, and if slides out the back. Unplug the connector, then reverse the process.
There is a release button on the side of the switch body for the knob. Reach under the dash, push the button and the knob pulls off. The bezel is supposed to use a special socket, but I removed mine with a pair of thin needle-nose pliers.
