Turbo 400 output shaft length

Post by nightglide »

Anyone know the length of the output shaft of a 400 when going to a Dana 20?
I guess there was 3 different lengths.
And does anyone know where to get said shaft?
I bought a rebuilt 400 to replace my t18 but it had a Dana 300 behind it and the output shaft was replaced with a 23 splined one.
Thanks

Check the Novak site research section, transfer case or transmission. They have info there for most common combos used by vehicle.

I went to my local trans shop and asked if they had any short shaft 2wd TH400 outputs laying around. They did and sold me one for $20. Works just fine. I don't remember the length or spline count, sorry.

I've been researching and calling all day lol. Called Novak, advance adapters and I think 3 local places.
Best info was advance adapters......he said shaft should stick out bout 4.5 inches from end of case and total length should be 9 3/16ths
Only thing is that sounds like the longest shaft offered and then I'm told it's a short shaft one......
Just wanna be sure I get right one. Only wanna pull tranny apart once

Hey, I know this thread is a couple years old now - but I believe I’m in the same spot as the OP. My kid just picked up a 78 Cherokee & we’re attempting to do this QT/d20 swap. I just picked up a d20 with an adapter & 32 spline input shaft so I’m trying to figure out what trans output shaft to get. Is the correct measurement 9.25 overall & 4.5 out of the back of the trans?

I have a stock output shaft from an AMC TH400 in front of me. It is 7" long in total. This would have been the output shaft for a Quadratrac.
